You may be able to treat a white tongue at home by practising good oral hygiene (more on this later!). It’s best to see a dentist or your primary care doctor. If it doesn’t go away within a week or causes so much pain it’s difficult to drink, eat, or speak.

When it comes to a white tongue, there is nothing you can do. It is possible to avoid the most common cause of white tongue, bad oral hygiene. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has compiled a list of the most important things. You can do to keep your mouth healthy throughout your life.

  • If you can, use fluoride toothpaste and drink fluoridated water.
  • To keep teeth and gums healthy, brush and floss twice a day.
  • Even if you wear dentures, make an appointment with your dentist once a year.
  • Don’t smoke and limit your alcohol consumption.
  • Maintain your diabetes if you have it.
  • If you can’t avoid taking medications that cause dry mouth, drink plenty of water and chew sugarless gum instead.
  • If notice any sudden changes in your mouth, contact your dentist immediately.
