Gear 4 Luffy

Gear 4 Luffy | 10 Things You Never Knew About Luffy’s Fourth Gear: Throughout One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy has grown into one of the most feared pirates. Luffy has mastered several powers in the form of gears thanks to the Gomu Gomu no Mi’s powers.

His current strongest gear is Gear 4, with which he’s defeated Doflamingo, Cracker, and even Charlotte Katakuri. Gear 4 has certainly served its purpose in the storey well, proving its ferocious power with each arc.

Gear 4 Luffy

It’s Progress

A two-year training on Ruskaina, the island of 48 seasons, inspired Monkey D. Luffy to create Gear 4. Luffy used Gear 4 to defeat the island’s beasts, which he did quite well.

Luffy’s use of Gear 4 has improved over time, and he can now use it without many of the initial issues. With Kaido and Big Mom looming over Luffy’s head, it will only grow stronger.

How It Works

Every Luffy gear brings a different Gomu Gomu no Mi property into play. In Gear 4, Luffy uses his Devil Fruit’s elasticity and compression to his advantage. Luffy can use Busoshoku Haki to compress his power by blowing into his muscles.

This increases elasticity, giving him more speed and power. Silvers Rayleigh thinks this is a clever way to deal with enemies and it also allows Luffy to fly, another advantage of Gear 4.

Tattoos With A Tribal Theme

Luffy’s constant use of Armament Haki on his body to keep Gear 4 causes tribal tattoos. Besides Luffy, characters like Charlotte Katakuri and Big Mom have used Haki with tribal tattoos.

The significance of it is unknown, but we believe it has to do with the power of Haki and Devil Fruit combining, rather than just coating the user in haki. Luffy’s body remains rubbery in Gear 4 despite being hardened with Armament Haki.

His Height

Luffy’s height is influenced by his use of Gear 4. Luffy was 1.72 metres tall at 17 years old. Luffy grew to 1.74 metres during the two-year gap. But this is nothing compared to how much he grows when he uses Gear 4.

According to the manga, Luffy grows to be around 4 metres tall, more than twice his original height. Gear 4: Boundman’s height is unknown, but it is likely around that figure.

His Metabolic Rate

Luffy’s Devil Fruit is extremely taxing on his body, causing him to expend a lot of energy quickly. Like Gear 2, Luffy’s Gear 4 causes him to expend a lot of energy quickly, as seen after his battle with Charlotte Cracker.

Luffy ate so many biscuits that he became bloated, but Tankman burned it all up in minutes. Even Nami was surprised by how much this power increased his metabolism.

Its Drawbacks

Gear 4 increases Luffy’s speed and strength due to the Devil Fruit’s power of compression. This ability has a disadvantage, especially when used in the Boundman form. The attacks’ ability to compress rather than stretch limits Luffy’s range.

Thankfully, Luffy’s solution appears to be a different form of Gear 4, called Snakeman. Luffy’s ability to stretch nearly infinitely compensates for Boundman’s lack. But his power isn’t as high as in Boundman.

Its Colour

Boundman sees Luffy coat himself in Armament Haki, which turns his body black where he uses it. In the anime, Haki’s black colour is tinted red. Oda’s version of Gear 4 colouring initially differed from the anime, but it appears he later adapted.

On the cover of One Piece Volume 89, Luffy’s Snakeman has the same reddish tint as in the anime. It’s unclear if Boundman will be the same colour.

Its Forms

Unlike Luffy’s other gears, Gear 4 has multiple applications. Luffy used the powerful Gear 4: Boundman against Donquixote Doflamingo. Initially, fans thought Boundman was the sum of Gear 4.

But Luffy soon proved this wrong when he used Gear 4: Tankman (Full Version) on Charlotte Cracker. Its regular version is still unknown. Luffy used Gear 4: Snakeman’s speed against Charlotte Katakuri.

The Source Of Inspiration

Gear 4 is said to be inspired by the Buddhist guardian entity known as the Nio Statue. Oda explains in the SBS that Luffy wants to protect his values, which is where the inspiration comes from.

The Nio Statue also has a ribbon around it, like Oda did with Gear 4’s steam. From what we’ve seen, Gear 4’s steam wraps around Luffy’s body.

Although Luffy has taken many forms throughout the series, Luffy’s Gear 4 is the only one to have an original soundtrack created by the anime team. The OST for this form is ‘Gear Fourth’. It’s also on the One Piece New World Original Soundtrack.

This theme was played when Luffy entered Snakeman to fight Charlotte Katakuri at the end of the Whole Cake Island arc. Of course, both OSTs are fantastic!
