Barbells In The Gym, Different Types

That’s one reason different types of barbells exist. Different sized and shaped bars allow you to better weigh your movements. With Movement Vault’s mobility and flexibility platform, founder Grayson Wickham explains.

That “different types of barbells provide you with different stimuli.” For example, using a traditional barbell and a trap or hex bar: “The bar (and weight) is directly in front of your body,” says Wickham.

Lifting that bar engages your posterior chain (back muscles), including your hamstrings and glutes. Hex or trap bar deadlifts, however, place the weight directly in the centre of your body. This position targets your quads when deadlifting.

Weight Of Each Bar

Even if they’re the same type, a gym’s bar may weigh differently depending on the brand, says Wickham. Some brands mark a barbell’s weight on the end, but if unsure, ask a trainer before loading on the plates.

Barbell Standard

Wickham recommends a 45-pound, 7-foot-long straight barbell for most lifts, including squats, deadlifts, bent-over rows, overhead presses, and even biceps curls, which can be performed with a standard barbell.

Olympic Barbell

It’s 45 pounds and 7 feet long, just like a regular barbell. The rotating sleeves on Olympic bars allow you to use them for Olympic weightlifting moves like clean-and-jerks and snatches, says Wickham.

In these complex movements, the rotating sleeves help you rotate the barbell without spinning the weight. For more complex moves, Olympic bars are typically thinner and smaller in diameter.

Female Barbell

Many larger gyms (and CrossFit boxes) have 35-pound women’s bars, which are thinner, lighter, and slightly shorter (6.5 feet).  Because women’s hands are smaller than men’s, these bars are easier to grip.

These lighter bars also make certain moves easier for beginners and those with less strength. Also, because a women’s bar has fewer weight plates, it requires less stability to safely perform exercises, says Wickham.

Hex Or Trap Bar

Trap or hex bars allow you to stand directly in the middle of the weight you want to lift. They can be used for deadlift variations, farmer carries, and trap shoulder shrugs, says Wickham.

EZ Bar

EZ bars are 20 to 40 pounds and much shorter than standard barbells. A variety of grips can be achieved with these, says Wickham, for biceps curls, triceps exercises (like skull-crushers), and rowing. By varying your grip, you can target different muscle groups.

Triceps Bar

Triceps bars are usually lighter than multi-grip bars, weighing between 20 and 40 pounds. With a narrow, neutral grip (palms facing each other), you can do triceps moves like skull crushers, Wickham says.

Squat Bar With A Safety Lock

Consider a safety squat bar as a more intense barbell contraption. The curved ends of this 60-75 pound bar help balance the weight by bringing it closer to the ground. In the middle of the bar are two padded bars that wrap around your shoulders.

Injured or disabled people who can’t reach back for regular back squats can use safety bars. The safety bar also puts more strain on your quads during squats due to the lighter weight plates.

Bars With Swiss Or Multi Grip Bars

Swiss or multi-grip bars are actually tiny metal ladders with bars on each end. In fact, they’re longer than another two bars on this list. In upper-body exercises like the bench press, overhead press, and row, they’re used to mix up your grip.

The Smith machine has a fixed-path barbell that can be used for bench presses, squats, lunges, and rows, according to Wickham. Your gym’s bar alone weighs 30 to 55 pounds. You don’t need to use stabilising muscles (like your core) to keep the Smith machine bar balanced, says Wickham.

As a result, moving it up and down its fixed track often feels super light (and awkward). But it’s a good place to start if you’re new to weightlifting.

Weight Clips And Locks, What About Them?

If you’re wondering how much your weight plate clip or lock weighs, the answer is: it depends. Gym clips are typically a quarter pound or less, while thicker plastic or metal locks (also known as collars) can weigh up to two pounds.

If you’re using light metal clips, don’t worry about them. But if you’re using heavier metal locks or collars, you might as well claim the extra pounds.

Weight Plates In A Variety Of Forms

Though each gym’s selection of weight plates varies, most gyms stock the following weight plates: 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 25, 35, and 45 lbs.

However, unlike most traditional weight rooms and box gyms, CrossFit boxes and weightlifting gyms stock colourful Olympic plates, a.k.a. bumper plates.

To safely drop the weight from various heights during Olympic lifts, Olympic plates have a metal core with a hard rubber coating. A barbell with traditional plates on it would be damaged if dropped from shoulder height.
