While there is some overlap, they are entirely different concepts. On the other hand, perhaps you are surrounded by family and friends but only communicate on a surface level, leaving you feeling empty and disconnected.

Maybe being alone makes you sad and long for company. That’s what loneliness feels like.

You Should Not Compare Yourself With Other

It is easier but than done, but try not to compare your social life to others’. It is not important how many friends you have with whom you socialise and determined by what works best for you.

There is no way of how to know, if someone with a large group of friends and a full social calendar is pleased.

Reconsider Your Use Of Social Media

Social media isn’t necessarily harmful or problematic, but if scrolling through your feeds makes you feel isolated and stressed, take a step back. That feed only tells part of the storey.

You have no idea if people are pleased or if they are pretending to be. It has nothing to do with you. So, please take a deep breath and put it all in context.

Run a test run by removing yourself from social media for 48 hours. If that helps, try setting a daily time limit of 10 to 15 minutes and sticking to it.

Take A Phone Call

Is there a recurring theme here? Without a doubt, cell phones and social media have altered the concept of being alone.

Is anyone genuinely alone these days when they can pick up their phone and text or call almost anyone? Or find out what that high school acquaintance is up to without even speaking to them?

Please turn off phone for sometime and put it away for one hour the next time you’re alone. Use this time for reconnecting with yourself and discover what it’s like to be completely alone.

Don’t know what to do with your free time? Grab a pen and a notepad, and jot down activities you might enjoy doing the next time you’re alone.

Make Time For Your Mind To Wander

Is the thought of doing nothing unsettling to you? That’s probably because you haven’t allowed yourself to be for a long time.

Set a timing of 5 minutes and try it out. That is all there is to it.

Five minutes of silence:

  • Television
  • Music
  • Internet
  • Podcasts
  • Books

Locate a comfortable spot to sit or lie down. If you prefer, close your eyes, dim the lights, or gaze out the window. If that is too passive, try a repetitive task like knitting, basketball dribbling, or dishwashing.

Allow your thoughts to wander — indeed wander — and see where they take you. Don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t take you far at first. Your mind will adjust to this newfound freedom over time.

Go On A Date With Yourself

Self-dates may sound cliche, but they can be a powerful tool for learning to be happy alone.

Are you stump as to what to do? Assume you’re trying to impress an actual date by showing them a good time. What would you do with them? What would you like them to see or do?

Now, go on that date with yourself. It may seem strange at first, but chances are you’ll see at least a few other people dining alone or buying a movie ticket for one.

You don’t have to go big if money is an issue. But keep in mind that paying for one is much less expensive than paying for two.

Is it still too daunting? Begin by spending only 10 minutes in a coffee shop. Be aware of your surroundings and take them in. When you’re comfortable with that, going out alone won’t seem so strange.

Get Some Exercise

Exercise promotes the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters in the brain that can make you feel happier.

Start small, even if it’s just morning stretches if you’re new to exercise. Increase your daily activity by a minute or two. As your confidence grows, you can try weight training, aerobics, or sports.

Plus, if you’re still hesitant to go out on your own, going to the gym alone can be a great place to start.

Spend Time Outside In Nature.

Another cliche, I know. But go outside. Relax in the backyard, go for a walk in the park, or sit by the water. Take in nature’s sights, sounds, and smells. Feel the wind on your face.

Take Advantage Of The Advantages Of Being Alone

It can be challenging for some people to be happy when they live alone. Sure, it’s a little quiet, and no one is there to listen to your post-work rants.

However, living alone has its advantages (naked vacuuming, anyone?). Make the most of the extra physical and mental space that comes with living alone:

Take up all of the available space. Spend the day occupying the entire kitchen to prepare a tasty meal that you can eat for the next week.

Disperse yourself. Are you trying to reintroduce yourself to an old hobby? Gather all materials and spread them out on the floor to decide what to use for your next project.

Not finished arranging in a single day? Not a problem. Leave it out until you’re finished, even if that’s in a week.

Organize a dance party. This one is self-explanatory. Put on your favourite music and, if your neighbours allow, turn it up. Dance as if no one is looking because, well, they aren’t.

Become Volunteer

There are several opportunities for volunteering your time in the service of others. You can volunteer in person or from the comfort of your own home.

Helping others can make feel good in either case. Furthermore, it can help you feel connected to others while also providing you with quality alone time.

Look for volunteer opportunities in your area. It is critical to find something that feels right for you. Check to see if their requirements are a good match for what you’re willing and able to do.

If the first thing you try does not work out, it is perfectly reasonable to try something else.

When the opportunity arises, engage in a random act of kindness.

No one to share a meal with? Eating alone does not have to imply eating prepackaged food in front of the television. Make a delicious meal for one.

Discover A Creative Outlet

Stay in bed and breakfast in a nearby town. Participate in a local festival or farmers’ market. Purchase a ticket to a concert or that incredible art exhibit that everyone is raving about.

Change Up Your Daily Routine

Even a good routine can eventually become a rut, leaving you uninspired. Consider your daily routine and immediate surroundings. What still works for you, and what has become stale?

There are stressors in life, and bad things happen. Ignoring this reality is pointless. But do you recall the last time something terrible happened to you and you figured out how to deal with it? That is a skill that should be honed further.

Develop Your Relationships

You may find yourself spending less time socializing as you become more comfortable being alone. That’s not a bad thing, but close social connections are still meaningful.

Make plans to see a family member, a friend or hang out with the team after work. Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time and have a meaningful conversation with them.

What is relationship between forgiveness and happiness? As it turns out, quite a bit. Forgiveness shows to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, among other health benefits.
