Career | Who Is Sally Struthers

It was a short period of time during the late Sixties and early Seventies when Struthers rose to prominence. As Gloria Stivic in the 1970 sitcom All In The Family, she became famous for her role in a nude scene with Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces (1970).

An episode of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which was written by Rob Reiner, led producer Norman Lear to the actress. Gloria was originally supposed to be played by Penny Marshall, Reiner’s then-fiancée and subsequent wife. Because Marshall resembled Jean Stapleton, who played Edith Bunker in the film.

In the premiere episode, Candice Azzara played Gloria, but was shortly replaced. After a rough start, the show became a hit starting with its summer reruns.

As well as providing tens of millions of people the chance to see “Gloria” defend her liberal views against bad stereotypes and inequalities. Struthers received two Emmys for her role on the show, in 1972 and 1979.

Struthers Remembered How She Got The Part In 2012

Due to a lack of professionalism, I had just been fired from The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. It’s all part of the plan to make it appear as if the Conway show has no budget or money.

Which is why there’s only one Tim Conway dancer instead of a long line like on The Jackie Gleason Show. As well as only one musician, who can’t even afford an instrument so he hums the opening theme song on a music stand.

What a hoot! And the suits objected, saying, “No, that makes the show appear cheap.” Tim Conway’s dancer was allowed to leave. For “All in the Family,” I wouldn’t have been able to read if they hadn’t done so.

On Gloria (1982–1983), Struthers returned to the role of Gloria as a newly divorced woman (she became an “exchange student”, when husband Mike exchanged her for one of his students). Gloria served as Dr. Burgess Meredith’s assistant in the animal clinic where the two worked together on the show.

She Was A Guest Host On The NBC Daytime Edition

Match Game’s 1990 reincarnation included her as a semi-regular panelist on a number of occasions. During her stint on the show, she was a guest host on the NBC daytime edition of Win, Lose, or Draw.

She also starred on Still Standing as Bill Miller’s manipulative mother, Louise, and on Gilmore Girls as Babette Dell. It was Struthers who provided the voices for a variety of animated series.

Such as The Pebbles and Bam-Bam show, TaleSpin, and the ABC series Dinosaurs produced by Walt Disney and Jim Henson. In which she played the role of a teenage Pebbles Flintstone (as Charlene Sinclair).

As Louise Segar and Roz Klein in 9 to 5: The Musical and Always, Patsy Cline in Always, Patsy Cline, Struthers has appeared at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine since the early 2000s, where she has starred since the early 2000s.

Ogunquit, Maine, detained her on suspicion of operating while intoxicated on September 12, 2012. She posted a $160 bail and was due in court on December 14, where a $500 fine and a 90-day license suspension are both expected due to her being a first-time offender.
